// WHAT IT MEANS
You have used the 5-hour allowance for your plan. On Pro and Max the Claude apps and Claude Code draw from the same pool, so a heavy Claude Code session can leave the web app "out of messages", and the reverse. On the free tier the wording is "out of free messages" and the pool is much smaller.
The time given is when your 5-hour window reopens, in your local time zone. It is not a daily cap and it is not tied to the calendar.
// WHEN IT RESETS
At the stated time. The window opened with your first message of the session — from either surface — and closes 5 hours later.
Anthropic sometimes resets everyone at once, usually around a model launch. The latest one is below.
// WHAT TO DO NOW
- 01 If you have Claude Code open, /usage shows exactly the same bars the app is enforcing.
- 02 On Max, Opus and the other models are metered separately — switching the model in the app may get you going again.
- 03 Long conversations cost more per message because the whole thread is re-sent each turn: start a new chat for a new topic.
- 04 Usage credits (Pro and Max) let you continue at pay-as-you-go rates until the window reopens.
// DOES IT AFFECT MY WEEKLY ALLOWANCE?
The message refers to the 5-hour pool. The weekly allowance is a separate gate shared the same way between the apps and Claude Code — Settings → Usage on the web shows both, with your fixed weekly reset time.
// ALSO APPEARS AS
- “You're out of free messages until 3 PM”
- “You've reached your usage limit”
- “Message limit reached”
